Baserunning

:: Running Out A Groundball

Objective
Allows players to practice the proper way to run to first base when they hit a groundball to the infield.
Setup

Players will start by forming a line at home plate.

Procedure
1.

Runner will take an imaginary swing from the side of the plate they would normally hit on.

2.

Player will quickly get up to full speed running in a straight line to first base.

3. As the runner reaches the bag they will slightly lean forward and hit the FRONT part of the bag.
4. After stepping on the bag they will immediately begin chopping their steps in order to slow down.
5. While slowing down the runner will look to the right (for an overthrow) and then....
6.

Look to the left - 2B (see if anyone is covering the bag or if they are sleeping.)

7.

Turn to the right and return to first base. Pick up the third base coach.

Coaching Tips

A heads up runner who looks in both directions will be able to take an extra base against a unaware infield.

Leaning at the last second could give the umpire the illusion that the runner reached the bag sooner than they did.

Runners will want to step on the front of the bag since it's the closest to home and will give the runner a quicker time to first base.
