Baserunning

:: Rounding First Base

Objective
Players will practice rounding the base on a base hit.
Setup

Players will form a line at home plate.

Procedure
1.

Runner will take an imaginary swing from the side of the plate they would normally hit from.

2.

Once a player realizes they have a sure hit they will pick a point about 5 feet to the right of first base and head directly at it.

3. As the runner gets about 3/4 the way to first base they will begin to turn as if heading to second base.
4. The runner will round the bag being sure to step on the inside corner.
5. The runner will listen to the first base coach or pick up the location of the ball to determine whether to go to second base or not.
6. If the runner can't advance they will hockey stop while taking as big of turn as possible so they could safely return to the bag if a throw is made.
7.

Be sure the runner's keep their eye on the ball the entire time once the step on first.

Coaching Tips

If a runner can advance to second base safely they should pick up the third base coach once they are halfway to second base to see if they could run to third base.

Every runner is different and some might need to go further out than the 5 feet recommended here.
